AndAMOS is an initiative of the Regional Hydroclimate Project (RHP) of the GEWEX - ANDEX (Complete version in Spanish) program from the Modeling transversal team.

Objective

AndAMOS is devoted to analyze the suitability of the current modeling chains when confronted to provide actionable data for impact studies and decision making. AndAMOS wants to provide a fruitful environment where climatologists, impact and stake holders can converge in a common objective. AndAMOS subverts the common design of modeling experiments, by putting in first stance the specific useful demands of the impact or stakeholders and specifically design the modeling experiment to satisfy the demand. We subvert the design, because firstly comes the demand and secondly design the experiment. The conjunction of socioeconomical demand with the design of the modeling experiment is called Experience.

Methodology

In collaboration with impact and stakeholders a series of topics are selected. These topics are selected as function of their relevance in terms of their sociol-economical impact and in terms of the scientific interest. Then is decided which topic will be tackled ans assumed as a new Experience.

Experience

Experience is at the core of AndAMOS. Once selected the topic in collaboration with all the parts, an climatological extreme event or episode is selected as representative of the selected topic. The use of extreme events becomes useful, because it reduces the amounts of computational resources (being a case study, it encompasses a short period of time) and allows to analyze in detail all the necessary steps to reach the required actionable data. Moreover it allows to perform simulations at km-scale horizontal resolution, which is considered to be one of the key aspects to provide reliable information. Once the Experience has been defined, a modeling chain is defined backwards (from the needs to the model including all the intermediate steps). At the present time, the model of selection is Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF). This includes:
  1. Understanding the data needs
  2. Selection of the case study
  3. Existing scientific literature
  4. Understanding which are the related scientific unknowns
  5. Definition of domain of simulation
  6. Designing modeling experimental set-up
  7. Understanding needs of pre-processing
  8. Inclusion (if needed) within the modeling chain potential of additional models
  9. Understanding needs of post-processing
  10. Revision of chain outcomes
  11. Provision of solutions and fixes to existing shortcomes or problems within the modeling chain

How we are

AndAMOS encompasses researchers from different South American countries as well as from Europe. It is coordinated by Lluís Fita (CIMA - IFAECI, Argentina)
