CORDEX Central America and South America

Online Paper-Writing Workshop on
Regional Climate Modeling

November 24-25 & December 8-9, 2020

INFORMATION

Activities

The 4-day Workshop will be run on the Zoom platform. The activity is planned in two modules of 2 days each and 3 hours per day. The Workshop is organized into three main building blocks:

  • 1) Updates on Regional Climate topics of interest in the SAM/CAM regions.
  • 2) Coordinated collaborative research.
  • 3) Approaches to write scientific papers.
In this organizational scheme the Workshop will have presentations on topics related to the overall WCRP and CORDEX activities. Invited speakers will also give presentations on the specific topics selected. These presentations are envisioned to cover the updated on-going research and to identify research needs and gaps. Invited presentations will allow participants to have a broad overview of the status of the related research in the SAM/CAM regions and/or in other regions of the world.

According to their research interests, participants and invited speakers will split up into groups to discuss and design a collaborative research study, encouraging the collaboration of SAM/CAM scientists in each topic if possible. The specialists on the topics are invited to guide each group in the discussion and research design with the final goal of writing a collaborative paper within a year or so.

A preliminary written proposal establishing the research focus, objective, data and methods, expected results, and timeline is expected from this activity. Also, a one-year timeline for the paper preparation and submission is an expected outcome of this experience.

Preparation for the workshop

With the aim of optimizing the activities in the meeting, participants will be asked to prepare and/or think about:

  • An specific scientific question to answer according to the topic selected
  • Read recommended scientific literature
  • Have a (short) presentation with your ideas for a collaborative paper, which may include your research advances in a selected topic
  • A tentative, but realistic timeline (no more than one year), which will be finalized during the workshop with the research team of the topic.
  • Observational and reanalyses data already available for the research of interest
  • Simulations: RCM CORDEX simulations (for instance: CORDEX-CORE).
  • Willingness to lead a group

Expected Outcomes

The expected outcomes of this workshop are:

  • Community engaged in a collaborative experience promoting networking
  • Scientific Paper
  • Presentations of results in future workshops
