Tropical-extratropical cloud band events over South America

PhD. Marcia T Zilli – School of Geography and the Environment, University of Oxford, Inglaterra

9/8/2022

My research focuses on understanding the dynamic and thermodynamic processes related to the formation of extensive cloud bands connecting the tropical source of moisture to the extratropics. I am especially interested in South America and the South Atlantic Convergence Zone due to its influence on the occurrence of floods and droughts over subtropical Brazil. In this talk, I will present the framework developed to study cloud band events, focusing mainly on the results over South America. With this framework, it is possible to identify the main mechanisms related to the cloud bands’ location, persistence, and intensity. I will also show some results using the same framework to identify biases in climate models, including some preliminary results using a convective-permitting model.

I am an Environmental Engineer (graduation in 2005) with an MSc in Water Resources and Environmental Engineering (2008), both from the Federal University of Parana (Brazil) and a PhD in Geography (2017) from the University of California Santa Barbara (USA). After finishing my PhD, I worked as a visiting researcher at the National Institute of Space Research (INPE, Brazil), studying the impacts of climate change on Brazilian agriculture. Since 2019, I have been a postdoctoral research assistant at the School of Geography and the Environment, University of Oxford (UK), where I study tropical-extratropical cloud band events over the Southern Hemisphere.
